Official: Next-Gen DVD Format War Over

Blu-Ray WinsAccording to Gizmodo, Toshiba will be announcing today that they will no longer be creating or researching the HD DVD format and instead conceded defeat to Sony’s Blu-Ray as the winner of the latest “format war.” I don’t plan on picking up a Blu-Ray player any time soon because of how ridiculously expensive they still are, as were DVD players when they first came out, but eventually I probably will. With the HDTV market becoming increasingly more affordable and the likelihood that the high definition DVD market following shortly this is pretty good news as to relieve consumer confusion over the differences. No, you won’t be able to play Blu-Ray DVD’s on your current player, however, once the prices come down on the Blu-Ray players, your current collection of standard definition DVD’s will still just fine and may also look a little nicer due to a feature called up-scaling.

A Very Merry Main Event Christmas

Main Event Christmas

Today my company, Perot Systems, had our annual party at the brand new Main Event in Lubbock, TX. It was awesome. First we played Lasertron (a.k.a. laser tag) of which I got the second highest point total of both teams and helped RED team to victory with a total of 155,140 points (23, 890 being mine). After that we got to bowl for an hour and I managed to win out of my group of six with a 119. Finally, I had a few dollars left on my card so I walked over to the arcade and managed to snag myself six small plush from the metal-crane-grab-machine-thing. I did quite well picking up two Jessie’s (from Toy Story 2), Barney, CareBear, blue Tweety, and last but not least Dora the Explorer.

It’s A PowerShot

Canon PowerShot S5 ISThis brand spankin’ new Canon PowerShot S5 IS showed up at my door during lunch today. Katie and I had ordered it either Saturday or Sunday, I can’t remember which. Katie noticed over the last few months that her camera had been taking increasingly blurrier photos. She is a big picture taker and it was starting to bother her. Instead of picking out another small pocket-sized point and shoot digital camera we decided to invest in a camera with a semi-professional looking zoom and various other capabilities. One really cool feature of this camera is it’s ability to take video of up to 1hr long or 2GB of space, whichever comes first. That’s pretty cool to me. Now we won’t need to worry about getting a video camera. If Katie will let me I plan on taking it out to Camp Rio Blanco in Crosbyton, TX this weekend for 37 to see if we can get some good shots of the scenery out there. We’ll see!

iPhone Killer?

I was looking around on www.gizmodo.com, a website about current or upcoming , and came across this new phone by LG called the CU920. Apparently over the next few months this new phone will be released on the AT&T wireless network. Not all details are available for it right now but it sure looks pretty cool and would undoubtedly be less expensive than the iPhone. It’s reported to also be using the new Mozilla Firefox Mobile browser for surfing the Internet while on your phone, very cool in my opinion. You can check out the article and more here.

nano nanu

iPod nano 8gb Last Wednesday Apple came out with all brand new iPods and they were all cheaper for the same amount of memory. Since I had bought my nano the week before I figured I was just plum out of luck. I called up Circuit City and asked them when the new iPods would be in and what the return policy for non-defective iPods was and they said “14 days.” Yesterday they got the new ones in and just in time as I would be just barely under the 14 days return period and so I swapped them out. The cool part is that I actually MADE money by swapping them out since the same capacity newer version was cheaper, so I got a credit to my credit card as well as a Circuit City gift card since it’s how I bought the iPod in the first place. The major difference is that it now plays video as well as and a new feature included called Cover Flow where you can scroll through all your by looking at the covers of all the albums in your collection, pretty cool I’d say.
