Official: Next-Gen DVD Format War Over

Blu-Ray WinsAccording to Gizmodo, Toshiba will be announcing today that they will no longer be creating or researching the HD DVD format and instead conceded defeat to Sony’s Blu-Ray as the winner of the latest “format war.” I don’t plan on picking up a Blu-Ray player any time soon because of how ridiculously expensive they still are, as were DVD players when they first came out, but eventually I probably will. With the HDTV market becoming increasingly more affordable and the likelihood that the high definition DVD market following shortly this is pretty good news as to relieve consumer confusion over the differences. No, you won’t be able to play Blu-Ray DVD’s on your current player, however, once the prices come down on the Blu-Ray players, your current collection of standard definition DVD’s will still just fine and may also look a little nicer due to a feature called up-scaling.

Overheard in the Office

Since opening up the 3rd Floor of the Covenant Specialty Hospital and with my close proximity to the nurse’s station I am treated to many of the intelligent, or unintelligent, ramblings of the nurses around me. I have been hearing stuff with greater regularity that makes me laugh and if you know much about me then you will understand why these comments would make me laugh. It’s like these people don’t even know that I’m here half the time with what they talk about. So here’s the first installment of many more to come. I give you

Female Nurse to Male Nurse: I just don’t trust . That paperless stuff they keep talking about I just figured is double the .

LifeLock Picked

LifeLockAccording to TechDirt things went a little awry for LifeLock. Some of you may remember but most likely a majority of you don’t. LifeLock is a company that had commercials out earlier this year touting their incomparable identify theft security mechanisms by parading their CEO’s Social Security number on the commercial for any incompetent ID thief to snag. Well, apparently their security isn’t as good as was hoped and can be demonstrated by reading more at the link above. The CEO’s identity was still stolen and used to get a $500 loan, whodathunkit?

It’s A PowerShot

Canon PowerShot S5 ISThis brand spankin’ new Canon PowerShot S5 IS showed up at my door during lunch today. Katie and I had ordered it either Saturday or Sunday, I can’t remember which. Katie noticed over the last few months that her camera had been taking increasingly blurrier photos. She is a big picture taker and it was starting to bother her. Instead of picking out another small pocket-sized point and shoot digital camera we decided to invest in a camera with a semi-professional looking zoom and various other capabilities. One really cool feature of this camera is it’s ability to take video of up to 1hr long or 2GB of space, whichever comes first. That’s pretty cool to me. Now we won’t need to worry about getting a video camera. If Katie will let me I plan on taking it out to Camp Rio Blanco in Crosbyton, TX this weekend for 37 to see if we can get some good shots of the scenery out there. We’ll see!
