Upholstering the Rail

This is the most difficult part and you must have a partner if you want this to go smoothly. This time I sprung for a full sheet of foam and stretchy vinyl so that I wouldn’t have any depressions or seams in this rail and I am very pleased with the end result. Everything I mentioned earlier goes for the stapling of the rail.

The dashed lines all around are 1″ inside and 2″ outside since the foam will have to wrap farther around the outside of the rail than the inside.

It gets a bit tricky here but not too much. Once all the outside has been stapled you’ll need to make sure that you give the straight aways 4″ of vinyl to pull on from the inside wood of the railing, not the foam.

For the corners to go smoothly again be careful and cutting in but leaving about 4″ from the wood edge make this triangles for pulling on to staple them closely.
