A Brian in the Wild

Wild Brian

Last week I was doing some people watching and spotted a Brian in the wild. There he was, in his natural habit pouring over colored spreadsheets and answering e-mails on his Blackberry. I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I had to risk it all and get a picture with this rare creature. He does not often allow himself to be seen except for once every other year or so and I decided the risk was well worth it. As you can tell I was not harmed as I was able to converse and relate with this man.

Br. Peter

As most of you know my brother Jesse no longer lives in the U.S. but in studying to become a monk. This past week he took his Simple Vows and took a new monastic name of Br. Peter. My parents were lucky enough to be able to visit for this occasion and here is my Dad’s account of the trip:

Hi Everyone,

We headed over last Saturday to attend Jesse’s reading of his Vow Chart.

We arrived Sunday morning; 2 hrs flight time to Atlanta and another 9 hrs to Rome, then a 2 hr drive to Norcia in the mountains, left us pretty beat. There was a tournament in town and all the hotels were booked solid, so we stayed with the Poor Claire’s. The nun’s have a section of their convent that they use as a bed & breakfast. Its simple, but they can really cook! Jesse had a chance to spend a bit of time with us between Vespers and Compline, so we took a walk outside the walls of the town and through the marshes. The sky was such a deep blue and the hills on all sides were tall green pastures or forest lands. Jesse is re-reading LOTR and says it reminds him of Rohan. Its truly a beautiful place.

Recap’d

Observations or stuff that has happened lately in no particular order:

I proposed to Katie on Aug. 21 and a date is set for June 21 ‘08.

is a little over six weeks away.

Brian is back to Texas but, instead of Lubbock he will be in Dallas. Finally!

beat SMU 49-9.

Andy makes some freakin’ awesome ribs.

My brother is now Br. Peter Jesse Bares, Peter being his monastic name.

Rehab sucks. However, I am told I am progressing quite well.

I’ve hit a bit of a snag in lately having a bad run of nasty beats over the last month or so.

Katie and I registered at Bed Beth & Beyond, Sears, and Target this weekend. It was exhausting.

I’m doing my best to keep cheerful about my situation.

I will be able to play football/volleyball/ultimate frisbee again in about three and half months.

I am most definitely enjoying the new iPod I bought last week even though Apple came out with new versions of all their iPods today.

Three weeks from now I will be visiting Dallas to see my brother in his first trip back to the States in almost two years.

This Saturday will be the first home game in eight or nine months when the Miners from El Paso show up to get stomped by the .

49-9

Graham Harrell

started the season off on a great note by shellacking the SMU Mustangs on Labor Day. The win extends ’s win streak over SMU to 12 games. Let’s hope that doesn’t need another heroic field goal in overtime this year to beat UTEP next weekend. It will be their second game in five days. Good luck !
