The One With Hooters Birthday Humiliation

Hooters Birthday Hat

Here’s me in my Hooters birthday cake hat looking thrilled.

Once a month we have a team “employee morale” lunch that’s on the company and since it was my birthday this week the jokers I work with decided it’d be a good idea to take me to Hooters. They also felt the need to tell the waitresses that it was my birthday in hopes of something embarrassing happening and they got their wish.

I was brought to the front of the restaurant and asked to hold a paper cup over my nose like a beak, they put a plastic shopping bag on my head and gave me two serving plates and I had to flap my way around the place like a chicken while they sang happy birthday. To protect my identity (and dignity?) the Hooters girl yelled out “This is Steven and it’s his 21st birthday!”

Below is the resulting footage taken by a co-worker on his Blackberry.

WARNING! Video and audio quality sucks.

Mildred “Grandma Peggy” Bares

I spent last week in California with family mourning and celebrating the life of my grandmother. I felt this would be a good opportunity to do something for the family that could last a long time. I wanted to respectfully capture the week’s events. I asked my wedding photographer, Kristin Bednarz, for some advice and this is what she had for me, “Document, document. Forget about yourself and get in close. Even if you think you are close enough, get in closer. Don’t be afraid to show emotion. Emotion drives us as human beings. We crave it whether sad or happy… remember it’s your job to tell this story.”

I hope I was able to do that.

Grandma Peggy, we all love you. Say hi to Grandpa Hub for us :)

CHL and Martial Arts

After a productive day of a four hour men’s retreat, picking up plywood for attic decking from a guy off craigslist, and loading up a new “nursing” chair for Logan’s room from a family friend all on Saturday as my brother and I were driving home we got to talking about these two subjects after seeing a car with way too many bumper stickers: CHL and Martial Arts.

First, we both agreed that, aside from it being manly, it would be cool to take concealed handgun license classes to get certified in the proper handling of a firearm as well as the training and potential greatness for marksmanship that could ensue. Jesse has never fired a gun and I’ve only done so a couple of times. We aren’t talking airsoft or paintball guns here either. Both of us have done that.

Secondly, we broached the topic of martial arts. We both admitted that we’ve been fortunate enough to never truly been in a situation where we needed to fight hands on but would like to know that we could handle ourselves if the need arose. We decided that martial arts was a good way to do that. Or any other hand to hand fighting technique for that matter.

Jesse and I decided that if we could master both, getting our CHL’s, and learning a fighting technique that we could handle ourselves in just about any physical altercation that we could realistically see ourselves in. So, anyone know of any good places in which to accomplish these goals?

Logan’s Baptism

This is my favorite picture from the weekend. Logan did great throughout the entire ceremony. He didn’t fuss, was pretty quiet, and smiled a lot. It’s as if he knew something pretty awesome was happening.
